Christianity: Why is religion so easy but relationship isn’t?
Americans seem to be able to say the word “God” with relative comfort. I don’t remember meeting many believers who appeared to be uncomfortable saying “I believe in God”, and most Americans do indeed claim to believe in God.
But what about religious symbols, there are a lot of people wearing cross necklaces….isn’t that a good thing? Many people wear the cross necklace for the wrong reasons; it has become a fashion statement with little meaning.
And then of course there is church. Many Christians go to church each week. They sit there quietly and listen to the preacher talk, but then walk out of church and say “see you next week, God”. What does that all equate to? Religion.
But what would happen if we all made Christianity personal? Yikes, isn’t that a scary concept? What if Christianity were truly about a relationship with God, through the love and sacrifice of Jesus Christ?
I think more people would freely and passionately proclaim the name of Jesus. What if people quit wearing cross necklaces as fashion jewelry and started wearing them to glorify the Prince of Peace?
That would mean the cross actually stood for amazing grace, love, mercy, and power; the kind of power that defeated death and gave us everlasting life. Wow!
And what about church, how does it play into relationship? If you go to church each week, sit there quietly, walk out, and repeat each week (or don’t go at all) then you are missing so much.
Jesus wants to meet each one of us at church as we praise and worship God. When we walk out of church each week Christianity doesn’t go on hold.
On the contrary, we need to take the love of Jesus to the world around us. Do something: love someone, take action, and glorify God. Now that’s relationship!
