Unmasked!

Hupocrit s was the word used to denote actors in Greek Tragedies. These hupocrit s or actors often wore mask as they pretended to be someone they were not.

That is the origin of our modern word hypocrite which is defined as a phony or pretender.

We sometimes have a tendency to hide who we really are behind a mask giving those around us an illusion that we are different than we really are.

When we remove our mask we allow people to see the real person we are. As we become transparent with others the Holy Spirit can begin transforming us more into the likeness of Christ.

The first step is to admit to ourselves and to another who we really are (1 John 1:9). God uses people to help shape us.

I have a mentor that I often call to share difficult situations I find myself going through.

It never fails that as I tell her how I perceive I have been mistreated and have a right to take matters into my own hands rather than wait on God to do his perfect work.

Do any of you also try to hurry God along?

She will gently ask me, “What is the fruit of the Spirit response in this situation?” (Galatians 5:22-23)

I find this question encouraging as it prompts me to look for a Christ-like response even if my sinful nature would rather not.

Think of a situation that you are facing, one in which it may difficult to respond in a Christ-like manner. Then ask yourself “What is the fruit of the Spirit response to this situation?”

After determining what that response would be –respond that way.

As we continue to do this we become more like Christ.

Each of us needs others to encourage and help build us up. (1 Thessalonians 5:11)

No one is exempt from making mistakes along the way.

However, it is a tragedy if we are not willing to take off our mask and allow the body of Christ (other believers in Jesus), through the power of the Holy Spirit (2 Corinthians 3:12-18), help us to become transformed into the likeness of Jesus Christ.

Isn't it time we all become unmasked?
